ACBR History - The Story So Far
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A brief history of our event.

It all started in 1986. Upon returning home from a cycling rally in Eastern Europe, Nova Scotia cyclist Gary Conrod realized that there was no such event near his home in Eastern Canada. He asked himself ...why not hold one here?" Atlantic Canada certainly was an attractive enough area. But would even a small rally work in such a scenic, but lowly populated region? The first gathering took place in 1987 in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia.

Hearing about the event by word-of-mouth, a friendly group of 120 cyclists showed up, many travelling from long distances away. The Atlantic Canada Bicycle Rally was born. From there the rally has grown, moving to a different location each year. The ACBR is a three-day festival. It is filled with social events and recreational bike rides. It is for all ages and levels of cycling. Several families take part, as well as many seniors. People come from far and wide to enjoy the rally. A proven success, the festival is building on two decades of well-received gatherings.
