This photo is from the exact current location
of the offices of Atlantic Canada Cycling. The picture above is from an exhibition
of archival photographs. The series describes life in the city of Halifax before
the Halifax Explosion and the long impact afterward of the disaster. In 1917 a large portion of Halifax was destoyed from the cfollision of two ships, one carryiong wartime munitons. In the exhibition images such as this as well as those of damaged buildings, homes, and destroyed
streets were interspersed with contemporary
news reports and official documents. These shots were followed by photographs
of relief efforts, and reconstruction work. Two web sites complement
this - 'Halifax Explosion 1917 Online Resources' and 'Halifax Explosion
Remembrance Book.' Together, they may serve as a model for making
archival documents accessible online, and will prove valuable to
teachers and researchers in Canadian History as well as the general
public.
This makeshift emergency hospital was one of many. The building has since been reconfigured many times. Today this area contains the Atlantic Canada Cycling HQ.
