[About Atlantic Canada Cycling

It began way back in 1987 with the advent of the Atlantic Canada Bicycle Rally. An avid cyclist from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia, Gary Conrod was invited as the only Canadian to the world's largest gathering of touring cyclists, held in 1986 in Katowice, Poland. Following an appeal in Bicycling Magazine, for several years Gary was involved in recruiting spare bicycle parts to be sent to the then Eastern Bloc country. Working with a bicycle club there, efforts were made to donate bicycle parts desperately needed by the cyclists there as imports were not allowed.

When Poland was granted the annual world cycling gathering for 1986 Gary was extended a special invitation. A massive 4,740-person extravaganza, Gary was the only Canadian in attendance. Upon returning to Canada he set about starting a similar but much smaller scale event in the Atlantic Provinces. With the help of cycling organizations, several avid bikers, and his family, he started organizing what would become the Atlantic Canada Bicycle Rally. By word of mouth, 120 people showed up at the first edition. The ACBR was born.

After a few years a "Post-Rally" cycling tour was added. This tour moved to different areas each year and requests began to add yearly bicycle events in the places that were most popular.

The headquaters of Atlantic Canada Cycling is located in downtown Halifax, Nova Scotia. We have been ten years now in the building and have expanded three times.

Known as the Pacific Buiding it has a very colourful history. In 1917, during World War I, it served as an emergency hospital when Halifax was destroyed by an explosion. Two ships, one loaded with munitions, collided in the harbour. Historians still debate if it was an accident or sabotage by enemy forces.

Canadian Pacific used it as a telecommunications building for many years. In later years it was a place where we understand big dances were held although information has been hard to find.

In recent years our building hosted a few night clubs, a section of which is now included as part of our offices.
