The Western Prince Edward Island Bicycle Tour
starts at the landing of one of the world's largest structures.
One week later its sighting in the distance will signal
the approaching end of our island journey.
Potato Fields
The rich island soil of Prince
Edward Island supports a great amount of farming. The island
clay is an extremely bright red in colour.
Red Clay Roads
The back roads of Prince Edward Island are often
soft red clay lanes. These are known as "heritage roads"
and are found not far from the main paved highways roads. This
allows exploration on these quiet lanes, but never being too
far from "civilization". These roads are suggested
as optional excursions for a cycle trip to the Island. They
have soft soil and an absence of many rocks. It makes for a
soft ride. The down side is when it rains - this is a time to
stay off these lanes - PEI's dirt roads turn into a soupy sticky
red mud which takes forever to wash off.
