Tour
Two - French Shore
Distance: 117
km (73 miles)
Starting Point:
Yarmouth; Weymouth
Region: South-West
Nova Scotia
Terrain: Rolling
When
the Acadians returned from their tragic
expulsion, they found their old homes
in the Annapolis Valley occupied by
newcomers brought in from other lands.
Many resettled along the windswept
coast, now referred to as the French
Shore.
A return loop is included
in this tour description, which can
be cycled between Yarmouth and Weymouth
on the hilly but attractive "back
road" (#340). Old homesteads
and a number of fur farms line the
road. A smaller run is also suggested
to turn inland at Church Point. This
option outlined in Tour 2 allows for
having part of the tour as part of
a cross-province ride, or as one loop
tour.
If for some perverse
reason one of the two most certain
tailwinds is against you, remember
that the interior is forested, and
you will do better against the wind.
As mentioned, the shore is one continuous
community. Large, romantic, churches
have been constructed overlooking
the bay. If you find yourself in the
mood to be alone, then you might consider
the "back road".
