Tour
3 Digby Neck
Distance: 118
km (73 miles)
Starting Point:
Digby
Region: South-West
Nova Scotia
Terrain: Hills
at the start and end of each island
For anyone
who looks over a map of Nova Scotia,
it is easy to become intrigued by this
long arm reaching into the Bay of Fundy.
It perks the imagination, and many are
curious what it is like. You don't go
to Digby Neck on your way to somewhere
else. This is a special tour off the
beaten track. You must make it your
destination, because there is nowhere
else beyond.
It is not highly developed, nor does
it have a large population. The island
is a quiet place, a refuge for birds,
and with whales offshore. The remains
of an ancient mountain chain, there
are unique land formations. The peninsula
is often protected from the strong winds
by trees. They at times prevent views
over the water, however, short side
roads take you to secluded spots on
both the Bay of Fundy, and St. Mary's
Bay. Two ferry rides are featured on
this interesting tour bringing you to
the beauty of Brier Island. This is
recommended as at least a two day tour,
and reservations should be acquired
for indoor stays well in advance before
you head out.
The Tour plan described in the
Nova Scotia Bicycle Book begins
in Digby. Home to one of world's largest
scallop fleets, it is a good focal point
close to the Saint John, New Brunswick
ferry.
