Tour
10 Wolfville / Grand Pre
Distance: 32 km (20 miles)
Starting Point:
Wolfville; Kentville
Region: Annapolis
Valley
Terrain: One medium sized hill
So much to
see and do, for so little cycling! This
is the land of Evangeline, celebrated
in Longfellow's famous romantic poem.
This tour's route winds its way through
the pretty Gaspereau Valley. It leads
by way of back roads, to Grand Pre National
Historic Park. Here was executed the
fateful orders to carry out the Expulsion
of the Acadians.
The Gaspereau Valley is old Acadia.
There is very little unsightly development
here, just old farms, orchards. and
trees. It is actually a "valley within
a valley", just over the Wolfville Ridge,
which separates it from the Annapolis
Valley. The ridge is a climb. but by
no means a mountain. About 150 meters
(450 ft.) high, going up is broken into
a couple of sections. If desired, they
can he walked quite quickly and easily.
From Grand Pre Park the tour takes
you a slightly different way of returning
to Wolfville. It is possible to ride
along the centuries old dyke, which
heads directly into town. The Nova Scotia Bicycle Book suggests this tour as suitable for a short, relaxed
outing.
