Tour 18 Peggy's Cove

Distance: 91 km (57 miles)

Starting Point: Halifax; Tantallon

Region: Metro Halifax

Terrain: Small rolling hills

The best known attraction in Nova Scotia, Peggy's Cove has captured the hearts of visitors for decades. A photographer's and artist's delight, immense rocks stand scattered randomly along the coast. Retreating glaciers during the last ice age removed most of the area's soil. The resulting 415 million year old "Devonian" granite barrens will surround you around the edge of the peninsula.

For decades the village has been a haven for painters and crafts people. Where artists lead, tourists soon follow. This beautiful area is the type of small scale place many feel meant best experienced in solitude. There are times to visit which will ensure you enjoy the village in the way it deserves. As an operator of a slow moving vehicle, this means adjusting your itinerary to best enjoy the cove and your ride there. The Nova Scotia Bicycle Book has a section on the traffic times and patterns, and hints for making your trip to the granite rocks of Peggy's' Cove an enjoyable and memorable experience.
