This is a tour
Gary Conrod designed for the Velo Halifax
Bicycle Club almost 25 years ago. This
is intended as a slow tour. An old city,
its many interesting sites sit close
to each other. Short sections are on
paths and harbour boardwalks. Since
they are shared with pedestrians, you
should prepare to walk your bike for
these brief, but interesting sections.
With 310,000 people, the Halifax region
is Atlantic Canada's primary centre.
The city consists of a peninsula, with
the harbour in front, and a fjord-like
arm of the sea known as the North West
Arm in back. The harbour is the world's
second largest (after Sydney, Australia).
Small in area, with compact streets
and fresh ocean air, Haligonians (inhabitants
of Halifax) enjoy a green and walkable
city. Filled with many trees- it is
estimated per person, it has more than
any other North American city. A historic
section lies along its waterfront, mixed
with newer buildings. Victorian and
Georgian era houses fan out creating
a fascinating contrast in architectural
styles. The tour includes sections of
the city decimated by the renown Halifax
Explosion and the resting place
of the victims of the Titanic
.
