The provinces of New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador,
Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island are found
at the eastern end of the country. (When New Brunswick, Nova Scotia,
and Prince Edward Island are considered alone without Newfoundland
and Labrador, they are known as the "Maritimes".
The four parts of Atlantic Canada are the smallest of
Canada's ten provinces and three territories. Do not think, though,
that this is a small region! Canada is the second largest country
in the world. By cyclists' standards, even its smallest regions
are huge. Each Atlantic Canada province can be the size of many
European countries.
With closer inspection, the magnitude of this region can be realized.
Its southern point reaches almost as the same latitude as Northern
California, or Spain. Here it gets warm enough to grow watermelons,
pears and even grapes. From this point, it stretches all the way
north to the caribou, tundra and icebergs of the arctic!
