Day 1 – Mont-Laurier Day Tour 64 km (40 mi.)
After transportation to Mont-Laurier, a smaller warm-up loop ride may be good before your Petit Train du Nord experience. Mont-Laurier is a town located on the banks of the Rivière du Lièvre, a tributary of the Ottawa River. Known as the “Capital of the Haute-Laurentides”, the city has an exceptionally good living environment, with natural connections.
It is a good town to explore, with many small parks, cafes and restaurants. There are many spots in Mont-Laurier to stay, and lots of restaurants before starting off or ending this nice ride through the Kiamika region.
Founded as Rapide-de-l’Orignal at the current location of Mont-Laurier, the name was changed in 1909 to honour Canadian Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier. With a population of 13,400, Mont-Laurier is actually one of the largest municipalities in Quebec in terms of area. It is surrounded by numerous lakes and mixed forests that support hunting, fishing and leisure, and the mainstay industry, logging.
The Rivière-du-Nord Regional Park is a large nature preserve north of Mont-Laurier. The park offers its visitors a favorite site for practicing a multitude of outdoor activities in all seasons. Interpretation trails will guide visitors to the falls and the remains of the old pulp mill and the old hydroelectric dam.
The highlight of this loop has to be the pair of covered bridges at Ferme-Rouge. It is a great break spot offering an amazing photo opportunity. There are services at Lac-des-Îles and just across the bridge at the village of Kiamika.
