Day 2 – Lac-des-Îles to Nominique 56 km (34 mi.)

We begin with our first full day on the P’tit du Train Nord. Nearing Lac Saguay is the Boisé Joseph BB-Gauthier woods trails. The starting point of the system is at km 164.6 off of the P’tit Train du Nord trail. It’ll take you through a mixed forest and a trout river. It leads to a belvedere from where the Saguay River can be seen. Interpretation panels tell all about the flora. The nearby town has a restaurant, public beach and the landmark sculpture of the “Grand six pieds” (“Six Foot Tall”) at the rest area.

Nominingue is the first reasonably large community reached on the trail after Mont-Laurier. It is, perhaps, the least “touristy” of all the towns along the Petit Train route. We camped at the town-run campground. The services are in need of care, but is in a nice stand of pine trees directly along the path. Not being so commercial there are limited larger indoor accommodations nearby except the gold course hotel.

There is a good beach not far away, on the banks of Grand Lac Nominingue.  There are not a lot of opportunities to cool down from the heat along the trail system like this one. The town has one grocery store and about four restaurants.
