Day 3 – Nominique to Rivière-Rouge 58 km (36 mi.)

After passing around Lac Nomininque, and a loop up and back to L’Ascension, this route stops at Rivière-Rouge. This diversion of the Petit Train du Nord follows sections on both sides of the Rivière-Rouge, up toward its source near L’Ascension. This area is known as La Vallée de la Rouge, with English-as-first-language here at 0% on the last census. Slow down for a break upon arriving at the L’Annonciation train station entering Rivière-Rouge. Built in 1903, it houses a tourist office with exhibitions. Explore vantage points of the river in town and its sandy beaches.

L’Oie-Zoo was set up in a marshland in the heart of town alongside the Petit Train du Nord. From the observation decks, you can observe Greater Snow Geese, Canada Geese, several species of ducks and a multitude of other birds that find refuge in this natural habitat. The campground at Rivière-Rouge offers tubing on the river. There are a few indoor accommodations but they fill up.
