Serving Almonte, Carleton Place, Pakenham, West Carleton and Lanark County

Almonte Bicycle Club runs a full spectrum of bicycling activities ranging from leisurely Sunday social rides on the road to provincial level championship races off road, organised on a non-profit basis by a dedicated group of volunteers.

Saturday and Sunday circle tours, conducted on scenic rural byways run from April to November. Starting usually from Almonte, rides proceed at a leisurely pace, in loose formation, with stops every 15 km for drinks and a restaurant lunch at the half way mark.

Distances start at 40km. As the season progresses, fitness and stamina build up to the point where 100km rides are within easy reach. Besides regular Sunday rides, the club promotes a number of touring events in the provincial calendar, which attract riders from other clubs. Foremost among these is the Valley Rally, held in July, now in its 11th year. While the majority of these rides take place on the road, one or two venture off road to enjoy the scenic solitude of the California Road and the K&P trail.

On a more competitive note, the Almonte Bicycle Club promotes evening time trials on 15 and 40km courses close to Almonte. Time trials running from May to September offer those who would like to pursue personal fitness goals the opportunity to measure their abilities in a low key environment.

Also of interest is the Canadian Kilometer Achievement Program in which partipants record annual distances pedalled and receive awards for levels of achievement ranging from 5000 to 50000 km. All results count towards an annual competition recognising the club with the greatest distance travelled.

For the off road enthusiast, the club participates in the annual ‘Paris-Roubaix’ sportif event in April and the Ottawa Region Cyclo Cross series in the fall.

Achievements are recognised at the club dinner at the end of the season. Plaques are awarded to the top performers in each category and records of achievement are awarded to every participant.

The club is affiliated with the Ontario Cycling Assocation and the Canadian Cycling Association, governing bodies for the sport. The club also supports local initiatives, with charity rides, promoted in April and September.

Membership is open to individuals for an annual fee of $65.00 per adult (over 18), and $25 (18 and under). After the Annual General Meeting of March 18, 2014, fees will be $70.00. Riders of all ages are welcome but for liability reasons, parental participation is required in the case of riders under 14 years of age. Dues include affiliation to the Ontario Cycling Association, which provides up to five million dollars of third party liability coverage during participation in club events.
