Sportwheels is a family owned business serving and supporting the community of Halifax for over 65 years.
Started by the Mayhew family in 1947, in Prince Edward Island, the “Mayhew Cycle shop” grew to Sackville in the late 1960’s. We started in a small building with Payzants Building Supplies and within a few years, we needed to move to a larger spot – which was a residential house located at 209 Sackville Dr, purchased by the Mayhew family to be renovated into Sportwheels.
Once completed, the store carried: bikes, roller skates, hockey skates, hockey sticks, performed bike repairs, and skate sharpening. We shared our Space with Monroe’s TV repair, until 1986 when we built our new building!
Our new building had: Sportwheels, Monroes TV repair, and Sackville Small Engine (owned by another Mayhew family member). As in the past – we again needed more space for our growing business, and in 1990 we expanded the building to twice the size, We now occupy the entire building! Still owned by the Mayhew family, now into the 4th generation.
To give our customers the best possible pricing & selection, in 2008 Sportwheels joined forces with the SPORTS EXCELLENCE banner of stores across Canada. We are now part of a national group of Sports Stores offering our customers even better products and pricing. We are now able to give you the classic Sportwheels Family Service and attention, but now with the most amazing products at the lowest prices in the market! We have EXCLUSIVE products to only our Store, to make the shopping experience even more exciting & affordable at Sportwheels Sports Excellence!!
